About the Presenters

Photo of Thomas D. Cook, PhD Thomas D. Cook, PhD, is a Professor of Sociology, Psychology, Education and Social Policy at Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois. He holds the Joan and Sarepta Harrison Chair in Ethics and Justice, and is a Fellow at the Institute for Policy Research. His interests include social science research methodology, program evaluation, whole school reform, and contextual factors that influence adolescent development, particularly for urban minorities.

Dr. Cook has written or edited 10 books including Quasi-Experimentation: Design and Analysis for Field Settings (Cook & Campbell, 1979) and Experimental and Quasi-Experimental Designs for Generalized Causal Inference (Shadish, Cook, & Campbell, 2001) and has published numerous articles and book chapters. He received the Myrdal Prize for Science from the Evaluation Research Society in 1982, the Donald Campbell Prize for Innovative Methodology from the Policy Sciences Organization in 1988, the Distinguished Scientist Award of Division 5 of the American Psychological Association in 1997, and the Sells Award for Lifetime Achievement, Society of Multivariate Experimental Psychology in 2008. Dr. Cook was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2000 and was inducted as the Margaret Mead Fellow of the American Academy of Political and Social Science in 2003.


Photo of Jeffrey C. Valentine, PhD

Jeffrey C. Valentine, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Educational and Counseling Psychology at the University of Louisville in Kentucky. He also serves as co-chair of the Campbell Collaboration’s Training Group; as a statistical editor in the Cochrane Collaboration’s Developmental, Psychosocial, and Learning Problems Group; and is former co-chair of the Campbell Methods Group.

Dr. Valentine's primary research interests and scholarly work are focused on two areas: improving the rigor with which systematic reviews are conducted in order to increase their trustworthiness and utility and applying the methods and techniques of systematic review and meta-analysis to issues related to public policy. He is a co-editor of the Handbook of Research Synthesis and Meta-Analysis, 2nd edition (Cooper, Hedges, & Valentine, 2009). His work has appeared in peer-reviewed publications such as the Journal of Educational and Behavioral Statistics, Psychological Bulletin, and Educational Psychologist.


Photo of James Bellini, PhD, CRC James Bellini, PhD, CRC, is a Professor of Education at Syracuse University, School of Education in Syracuse, New York, where he holds a dual appointment in the Counseling and Human Services Department, Rehabilitation Counseling Program and in the Cultural Foundations of Education Department, Disability Studies program. Dr. Bellini is Principal Investigator and Co-Director of training for the NIDRR-funded Syracuse University Advanced Training in Rehabilitation Research and Disability Policy and Training (AART) Project.

He has authored/coauthored more than 40 empirical and conceptual journal articles and book chapters in rehabilitation related to Federal-State vocational rehabilitation outcomes, rehabilitation policy, and rehabilitation research methodology and training including two textbooks: Research in Rehabilitation Counseling: A Guide to Design, Methodology, and Utilization (1999), and Emerging Issues in Rehabilitation Counseling (2001). Dr. Bellini received the American Rehabilitation Counseling Association (ARCA) Outstanding Achievement Award in 1996 and again in 2001. He has served as a Commissioner of the Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification (1999-2004) and as a Commissioner for the Council on Rehabilitation Education (2002-2004).
