            <description><![CDATA[<p>NIDRR Developments:
<br />Dr. Alexa Posny, the Assistant Secretary for the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services (OSERS), has announced that David Esquith will move from his current position as the Director of the State Monitoring and Program Improvement Division (RSA) to assume the position of Deputy Director of NIDRR. Mr. Esquith has been in OSERS over 20 years, has held assignments in OSEP and, for 13 years, in the Policy, Planning, Budget and Evaluation Division in NIDRR. As many of you know, Sue Swenson, the Deputy Assistant Secretary of OSERS, has been named the Acting Director of NIDRR, replacing Lynnae Rutledge, the director of RSA. <a href="http://www2.ed.gov/about/offices/list/osers/news.html">News from OSERS</a></p>]]></description>

<p>Dates: <strong>October 14 & 15, 2010</strong>, Hyatt Regency, Crystal City, VA</p>

<p>Focus: This conference will examine the potential of existing and emerging technologies to promote improved health and function for people with disabilities through greater participation in beneficial levels of physical activity. The conference will include presentations on:
<ul>
	<li>Virtual exercise environments to promote greater participation in physical activity and encourage adherence to regular physical activity.</li>
	<li>Evaluation of activity monitors for estimating energy expenditure among people with spinal cord injury.</li>
	<li>Biomechanical evaluation of a multi-purpose upper-body cardiovascular device.</li>
	<li>Development of national and international standards for universally designed fitness equipment.</li>
	<li>Technology-based approaches to conducting rapid, reliable accessibility surveys of fitness and recreation venues.</li>
	<li>The use of information technology to develop user-supported communities for sharing assistive devices to promote more active lifestyles among people with disabilities.</li>

            <title>Lynnae M. Ruttledge Confirmed as Commissioner, Rehabilitation Services Administration, U.S. Department of Education</title>

            <description><![CDATA[On March 25, 2010, Alexa Posny, Assistant Secretary for the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services (<a href="http://ed.gov/about/offices/list/osers/index.html">OSERS</a>) in the U.S. Department of Education announced that Lynnae Ruttledge, Commissioner of the Rehabilitation Services Administration (RSA) will serve as Acting Director of the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (<a href="http://www2.ed.gov/about/offices/list/osers/nidrr/index.html?src=ncddr">NIDRR</a>). Commissioner Ruttledge was nominated by President Obama to be Commissioner of RSA and appointed on January 4, 2010 after Senate confirmation.]]></description>

            <description><![CDATA[<p>April 7, 2008: <a href="http://www.ncddr.org/new/announcements/EMRfPwD/index.html">U.S. Department of Education, Emergency Management Research and People With Disabilities: A Resource Guide, Washington, D.C., 2008.</a><br />This resource guide is the culmination of cooperative efforts by NIDRR, the Department of Education, the Research Subcommittee of the Interagency Coordinating Council on Emergency Preparedness and Individuals with Disabilities (ICC), and the New Freedom Initiative Subcommittee of the Interagency Committee on Disability Research (ICDR). The guide provides a listing and description of research projects funded by the federal government and nonfederal entities, research recommendations that have come out of conferences on emergency management and disability, and a bibliography of relevant research publications.</p>

            <description><![CDATA[<p>The Assistant Secretary for Special Education and 
Rehabilitative Services (OSERS) publishes the Final Long-Range Plan 
(Final Plan) for the National Institute on Disability and 
Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR) for FY 2005 through 2009. As required 
by the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as amended (Act), the Assistant 
Secretary takes this action to outline priorities for rehabilitation 
research, demonstration projects, training, and related activities, and 
to explain the basis for these priorities.</p>
