Scientist Knowledge Translation Training
January 11-12, 2010
The Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, Ontario
A well-developed knowledge translation (KT) plan is emerging as a proposal requirement for health research in Canada and abroad, and there is greater attention to research utilization and research impact. The SKTT© training course was developed on the premise that scientists are agents of change in creating research impact, promoting research utilization, and ensuring their research findings reach the appropriate audiences. There is a skill set surrounding KT practice, and it is these competencies that the training course was designed to impart.

3rd Annual National Institutes of Health (NIH) Conference
"Science of Dissemination and Implementation: Methods and Measurement"
March 15-16, 2010
Hyatt Regency Bethesda, Bethesda, Maryland
There is a recognized need to close the gap between research evidence and clinical and public health practice, but how is this best accomplished? Although emerging as a field of research in health and medicine, dissemination and implementation science is as yet underdeveloped. A forum is needed to facilitate growth in the science of dissemination and implementation. Researchers and evaluators who are interested in identifying opportunities and obstacles for dissemination and implementation research/evaluation are encouraged to attend this meeting. The goal is to engage in dialog, exchange ideas, explore contemporary topics and challenge one another to identify and test research designs, methods and measurement that will advance dissemination and implementation science.

Union College
"Disability and Ethics through the Life Cycle: Cases, Controversies and Finding Common Ground"
May 21-22, 2010
Schenectady, NY
Despite a common interest in facilitating good medical care, bioethicists and members of the disability rights community sometimes differ in their approach to issues arising in the bio-medical settings, especially on such polarizing issues as abortion and physician-assisted suicide. Focusing on these polarizing issues, however, distracts attention from other ethical issues that affect people with disabilities in biomedical contexts. This conference will offer a forum for bioethicists, disability-rights advocates, and other stakeholders with a different focus for discussing these issues by viewing disability from a life -cycle perspective. People confront disability through the life cycle: infancy, childhood, reproductive years, middle age, and old age. At each age they confront situations with ethical dimensions that present them, their families, and their caregivers and biomedical researchers with ethical challenges. This conference is designed to promote interdisciplinary conversations about these less frequently discussed ethical issues. We are soliciting contributed papers or panels for highly interactive sessions. Those interested should submit a 250-word abstract describing original work that does not substantially overlap with papers already published. Topics of interest include but are not limited to specific cases where disability generates ethical issues during infancy, childhood, the reproductive years, middle age, and old age, or research on people with disabilities. Because of the conference’s life-cycle focus, no papers on prenatal issues or assisted suicide will be considered.

Sixth International Congress of Qualitative Inquiry (QI2010)
"Qualitative Inquiry for a Global Community in Crisis"
May 26-29, 2010
University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign
In these troubling political times qualitative researchers are called upon to become human rights advocates, to honor the sanctity of life, and the core values of privacy, human dignity, peace, justice, freedom from fear and violence. The 2010 Congress will offer scholars the opportunity to form coalitions, to engage in debate, and dialogue on how qualitative research can be used to can advance the causes of social justice, while addressing racial, ethnic, gender and environmental disparities in education, welfare and healthcare. Delegates will show how critical inquiry can be used to bridge gaps in cultural and linguistic understandings.

"Knowledge Translation Tools for Scientists"
August 11-12, 2010
Mandarin Oriental Hotel
Washington, DC

Overview
The Scientist Knowledge Translation Training (SKTT) course is intended for health science researchers across all four scientific pillars (basic, clinical, health services, population health) who have an interest in sharing research knowledge with (multiple) audiences beyond the traditional academic community, as appropriate, and in increasing the impact potential of their research. The course was developed and evaluated through funding provided by the Canadian Health Services Research Foundation and the Hospital for Sick Children Research Institute. We acknowledge the Knowledge Brokering for Paediatric Healthcare Research Team, the Child Health Evaluative Sciences program of Sick Kids' Research Institute, the 77 scientists within Sick Kids on which this program was evaluated, and our research partners: Dr. Paula Goering and Ms. Dale Butterill from the Health Systems Research and Consulting Unit, Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) and Ms. Elaine Orrbine from the Canadian Association of Paediatric Health Centres (CAPHC).
